Carlos Correa remarks on the Twins’ inaction during the winter

It would be a vast understatement to say that the Minnesota Twins had a quiet offseason. This week, Joe Pohlad made some noise, but not in the manner that his supporters had hoped. When Pohlad spoke with WCCO Radio, he validated what the majority of Twins supporters had been fearing all summer.

Pohlad stated unequivocally that the Twins are not interested in spending a significant amount of money on a free agent this season, even if he was comparing them to teams like the Orioles and Rays to support a low payroll.

Regarding flexibility, I will say that Derek Falvey and his team don’t live fast and furious by a certain number when they believe the proper opportunity is in front of them, according to Pohlad. Nevertheless, we are not going to invest $30 million in a player at this time.

Due to problems with television rights, Minnesota was forced to make only small roster additions. Such an event following such an optimistic conclusion to the season, which included the team’s deepest postseason run since 2002, sent supporters reeling back to the agonizingly tight days of the early 2000s and the sense of opportunity lost for the sake of cost-cutting.

Fans have correctly expressed their disapproval of the lack of action during the offseason, and those remarks were the icing on the cake. Now that spring training has begun, athletes are speaking up in the discourse.Carlos Correa remarks on the Twins’ inaction during the winter

As always, Dan Hayes authored a fantastic article for The Athletic that added nuance to Pohlad’s remarks and, more importantly, provided insight from within the clubhouse.

Interestingly, fans have called out Carlos Correa’s name to vent their annoyance, wondering what he might be thinking about the lack of action during the summer, and he said it rather clearly.

It goes without saying that you want guys with names, credentials, and experience. However, Correa noted that there are many young men who are capable of doing the task, and we clearly have faith in the men in our farm system. I’ve worked with several excellent teams. I like where we are right now.

Generally speaking, fans are able to identify a bootlicking comment when they hear one, and this does not appear to be one. Throughout the postseason, Correa made a name for himself in the clubhouse and reminded everyone why the team gave him $200 million the previous offseason just under his leadership.

Contrary to all that has been thrown at them following Joe’s remarks, Correa’s agreement demonstrates ownership’s willingness to spend when necessary. Though Correa’s remarks certainly lessen some of the annoyance, it’s still a poor image for the Twins to have pursued the most successful playoffs in two decades by cutting pennies.

It serves as a reminder that any criticism directed towards the Pohlad family for not investing in team improvement is an inadvertent slight to the team’s existing talent. The Twins will welcome back a fully healthy Byron Buxton, along with players like Austin Martin and Brooks Lee; however, the lads still have a lot of work to do.

Although Correa’s remarks serve as a reminder that nothing is ever accomplished by signing checks in the summer, nobody needs to excuse the team’s lack of investment.
