(AP) — FORT MYERS, FL First baseman Carlos Santana has a one-year contract with the Minnesota Twins that includes a $250,000 performance bonus.
In the agreement revealed on February 7, Santana received a $5.25 million guarantee.
For each of the 500 and 550 plate appearances, he would receive $125,000.
The switch-hitter, who will turn 38 on April 8, played 146 games for Pittsburgh and Milwaukee last season, hitting.240 with 33 doubles, 23 home runs, and 86 RBIs.
Santana was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award and led all big league first basemen with 11 defensive runs saved, per FanGraphs.
The Twins are the seventh big league franchise in 15 seasons for the 2019 All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner. In 98 games at Target Field, he has hit 17 home runs, and in 1,930 games, his on-base percentage is.356.
The Mets’ spring training slate continued on Friday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
In his debut appearance in a game as a Met, Luis Severino was accurate and productive. Severino tore through a lineup full of Cardinals regulars, pitching his fastball between 94 and 96 mph for the majority of his innings.
Severino retired Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Gorman on routine fly balls after Dylan Carlson scored on a throwing error by Yelmer Sanchez in the first inning.
Severino had a spotless inning in the second, getting rid of Wilson Contreras and Nolan Arenado. Then, he cranked his fastball to 98 mph and struck out Matt Carpenter with his final pitch of the game.
– Starling Marte got things started in his second spring training game by bunting down the third base line and beating the throw at first base with his wheels.
In addition, Marte displayed his arm by hitting Carlson with a shot from right field as he attempted to tag up from second base on a fly out.
– Mark Vientos began the game at third base and went the other way on a 95 mph fastball from Matthew Liberatore to smash a solo home run to right center in the second inning. Vientos completed with a stroll, going 1 for 2.
– Presenting a prospectEven though Blade Tidwell’s first inning of work was betrayed by the Mets defense, he was nonetheless impressive.
Tidwell did not allow any strong contact in the period, although allowing two runs (mostly because of Jordan Walker’s RBI on a strikeout fastball that got past the catcher and a misplay at third base). He ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, getting Arenado to swing at a 97 mph fastball after striking out Gorman.
The second inning for Tidwell was less exciting. Before surrendering a triple and being pulled after recording the first two outs (including another strikeout).
The 22-year-old was ranked No. 8 on Joe DeMayo’s most recent list of the top 30 Mets prospects. He has the potential to be a No. 2 starter with an MLB ETA of 2025.
– This spring, Trayce Thompson was 4-for-7 entering the game with two home runs and six RBI. His first two ups on Friday were walks, so he didn’t get much to hit. In his final at-bat, Thompson lined out to third.
– In his second at-bat, Francisco Lindor hooked a double to the gap in right center. He was 1 for 2 in the end.
Amidst a struggle for a final bullpen place, Sean Reid-Foley threw a perfect inning while recording one strikeout.
– ProspectIn the eighth inning, Ryan Clifford had a chance to bat and grounded out to second base.
