Kevin O’Connell is hoping that Kirk Cousins, an upcoming free agent, will rejoin the Vikings.
It’s possible that Kirk Cousins played his last snap for the Vikings on Sunday. It is not what Kevin O’Connell wishes to hear.
When Cousins becomes a free agent this offseason, the Vikings coach stated that he hopes the team will be able to retain the player, who sustained a season-ending Achilles tear in Minnesota’s victory over the Packers on Sunday.
You are all aware of my feelings toward Kirk. When asked if he would like to see Cousins return for the upcoming season, O’Connell told reporters, Kirk knows how I feel about Kirk.
I believe he was playing as well as anyone in the National Football League, and one of the most difficult things to deal with during this time was realizing where our team could have gone and that he was having his best season yet.
Hopefully, we will still make it to that location. It will be difficult, but we must embrace it and work to succeed without Kirk Cousins and the excellent quarterback play we were receiving from him every week.
Cousins was on track to have perhaps his finest season in his six years with the Vikings, if not his career, despite being in an unusually lame-duck year for a quarterback of his talent.
Through the first eight games, he had a 103.8 passer rating, completing 69.5% of his throws for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Many of those figures, such as completion percentage (fifth), passing yards (second), passing touchdowns (tied for first), and passer rating (second), put him in the top five.
After being placed on injured reserve and missing the previous three games due to a hamstring injury sustained in Week 5, Cousins also produced impressive numbers. Jefferson is the current offensive player of the year.
The Vikings’ chances of making the playoffs were maintained as the seasoned quarterback led the team to three straight victories, pushing their record back to.500 at 4-4.
Naturally, the Vikings won’t be able to witness whether Cousins can lead them to the postseason for a consecutive year.
The fact that Cousins cannot be franchise-tagged and the team must negotiate contracts with other prominent players like Jefferson (who postponed extension discussions at the beginning of the season) and Danielle Hunter—who is expected to become a free agent—all contribute to the ambiguity of the situation.
Nevertheless, O’Connell stated unequivocally that Cousins should be the purple and gold’s center.
We had a terrific internal conversation and discussed a variety of topics, including Kirk Cousins’ impending return to health, in order to ensure that we gave ourselves the best chance to pursue a number of avenues with the position, according to O’Connell.
Kirk is aware of my feelings for him, and I hope that things work out even though I know he’s going to be a free agent after this season.
