According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Dan Pitcher will remain with the Cincinnati Bengals to take over as offensive coordinator under head coach Zac Taylor, replacing Brian Callahan. This seems to be the direction the wind was going.
Pitcher was set to travel to New Orleans on Thursday for a follow-up interview for the offensive coordinator position with the New Orleans Saints, with whom he had already conducted an interview. However, since he’s remaining put and accepting a promotion in Cincinnati, they won’t have the chance to talk to him.
While losing out on one of their top picks for the position is sad, the Saints have no shortage of worthy applicants. I hope they can rapidly switch to something else. The league is filling coordinator positions, and Mickey Loomis and Dennis Allen of the Saints have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to bring in a strong candidate. Should they fail to meet that goal, then a large portion of the criticism they have received in the past two years of living without Sean Payton would be justified.
