Saints OC Derek Carr’s struggles led to Pete Carmichael’s firing; he had been in the role since 2009.
One of the coaching staff’s longest-serving members is leaving the New Orleans Saints.
On Tuesday, the organization declared that Dennis Allen’s staff had lost three personnel, including offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael.
Wide receivers Coach Kodi Burns, senior offensive assistant Bob Bicknell, and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael have all left the team, according to Dennis Allen’s announcement.
Prior to being elevated to offensive coordinator in 2009, Carmichael was a founding member of Sean Payton’s coaching staff, having joined the Saints in 2006 as their quarterbacks coach. When the team moved from head coach Dennis Allen to Payton in 2022, he stayed in that position.
According to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, Allen stated in a statement that “these types of decisions are never easy to come to, but are critical as we move forward.”
“I want to thank Pete in particular for his 18 years of service to this staff. I hold him in the highest regard, both as a colleague and for the work he has accomplished.”
From 2009 to 2019, the Saints offense, led by Carmichael, finished in the top 10 in yardage for 11 consecutive seasons. But even with seasoned quarterback Derek Carr starting at quarterback, the team had trouble staying consistent this year.
With 337.2 yards per game and 23.6 points per game, New Orleans was ranked ninth and fourteenth in the NFL, respectively.
Despite leading the team to a 9-8 record and missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season, Carr completed his career with 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions in the passing game.
It will be intriguing to watch who the Saints choose to lead the team back to glory in 2024 because they have enough offensive potential to compete with the best teams in the league.
