Given the team’s recent history of short coaching tenures, New York Giants president, CEO, and co-owner John Mara is allegedly not interested in replacing head coach Brian Daboll.
Reluctant to Fire Daboll, Mara Feels ‘Embarrassed’ by Regular HC Changes
According to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports, John Mara, the president, CEO, and co-owner of the New York Giants, is apparently not interested in sacking head coach Brian Daboll because of the team’s recent history of short coaching tenures.
According to Vacchiano, “He’s legitimately ashamed by how much turnover there has been,” an unnamed team insider claimed.
Since veteran coach Tom Coughlin left the team following New York’s 2015 season, no head coach had been with the team longer than two years prior to Daboll’s hiring ahead of the 2022 campaign.
Daboll’s job security was mostly unmentioned after his rookie season, as the Giants finished 9-7-1 in 2022 and qualified for the postseason.
In the wild-card round, New York triumphed against the Minnesota Vikings as well, their first postseason win since defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 46.
In 2023, the Giants regressed, concluding with a meager 6-11. Before suffering an ACL tear in Week 9, quarterback Daniel Jones started six games. NY’s record in his starts was 1–5.
Throughout the Giants’ underwhelming 2023 campaign, Daboll’s annoyance was frequently evident on the sidelines. Mara praised the head coach for his ability to maintain composure behind the scenes, even if he acknowledged that he wished he would “tone it down.”
Mara stated, via Vacchiano, “There are times when I wish he would tone it down a little bit.” However, I also watch how he behaves with colleagues in the office and during team meetings.
There’s always something cool about him. Does he occasionally become agitated during the games? Yes. I concur as well. It’s not a big deal, in my opinion.”
Even though Daboll doesn’t seem to be in trouble going into the 2024 campaign, another losing campaign would raise further concerns about his long-term future with the squad.
