Week 1 of the 2024 season was rough for both the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets, with both teams losing by double digits. Throughout the offseason, the two teams have been linked due to wide receiver Davante Adams.
The Jets have been interested in Adams since last season, but the Raiders have shown no desire to trade him. Meanwhile, New York is dealing with a contract holdout from star pass rusher Haason Reddick, and there’s no resolution in sight. NFL insider Josina Anderson hinted at a potential trade, suggesting that the Jets might consider swapping Reddick for Adams.
In a September 9 post on X, Anderson mentioned hearing a Jets sideline conversation suggesting a Reddick trade for the Raiders’ top wide receiver, though Adams wasn’t explicitly named. The trade could be mutually beneficial.
Before the season, the Raiders were unlikely to consider a Reddick-Adams swap, but the injury to defensive end Malcolm Koonce and Tyree Wilson’s knee issue in Week 1 have thinned their defensive line. Las Vegas, a defense-first team, could be tempted to trade for Reddick, who has 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons. Adams had just five catches for 59 yards in Week 1, and despite his talent, the Raiders have struggled to involve him in the offense.
Losing Adams would hurt, but the Raiders have other offensive options like Jakobi Meyers and Brock Bowers. While it might be too soon to make such a big move, if the Raiders continue to struggle, trading the 31-year-old Adams could become more appealing.
If traded, Reddick would likely demand a new contract, given that he’s currently holding out. The Raiders, with $28 million in cap space, could afford to give him a raise, and pairing him with Maxx Crosby on defense could be a winning formula.
