Minnesota was Perhaps Wilson’s Best Shot to Start

The Vikings’ next quarterback rapidly came into focus once it was revealed that Kirk Cousins was joining the Falcons. In order to give the Vikings a year or two to find a franchise quarterback while still perhaps being competitive, some thought that Russell Wilson would be a suitable option as a bridge quarterback. Others included Zach Wilson, who has showed glimpses of greatness, especially when given the go-ahead by the group and coaching staff.

In the end, the Vikings chose Sam Darnold, who is comparable to Wilson in that he was selected by the Jets, had difficulties, and has been searching for a genuine opportunity to play since then.

Possible Teams Zach Wilson Could Still Play For

That list is small, if it exists at all, in terms of teams Zach Wilson might play for and start for. He will almost certainly be a third-string or backup quarterback for some team, but predicting backups is as accurate as pulling names out of a hat. Granted, some teams may currently have a fairly stable depth chart, but all it would take is a trade involving a quality running back or receiver, and the backup would be gone to a different team.

However, the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Denver Broncos are three clubs that make a lot of sense. Although Wilson might not play, he would still be a noteworthy addition for any of these three clubs, considering none of them have a strong quarterback room. Wilson would most certainly play for the 49ers, who were interested in drafting him out of college anyhow, and run an offense remarkably similar to the one he did for BYU.

Summary

Zach Wilson is simply too good to pass up, but teams without a proven quarterback will probably be reluctant to take him based on his past performance. But one thing is certain: He must leave New York. Wilson has been misled by the club, coaches, and organization too often for him to stay and be useful in any capacity.

Since most teams will have figured out their QB situation by next week, or at least until after the NFL Draft, Wilson will want to be on a new club by then. Alternatively, he might be stranded in New York through training camp.
