The New York Yankees and American League MVP Aaron Judge is set to agree to a $450.6 million, nine-year contract on Friday, making it the largest in baseball history.

The contract was agreed to on December 7th, subject to a successful physical, and New York made the announcement and scheduled a news conference for Wednesday at Yankee Stadium to explain the arrangement.

Judge broke the old AL record of 61 home runs established by Roger Maris of the Yankees in 1961 with 62 last season. Judge rejected the Yankees’ offer of $213.5 million spread over seven years (2023–2029) just before opening day.

Only Mike Trout’s $426.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels for the 2019–2031 season and Mookie Betts’ $365 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2021–2022-season were greater than Judge’s. With an average salary of $40 million, Judge earns the highest compensation of any position player, second only to pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander of the New York Mets ($43.33 million).

With 131 RBI, Judge tied for the major league lead while hitting.311. He led all players in home runs hit (16), the biggest differential since Jimmie Foxx of the Philadelphia Athletics hit 58 in 1932 and Babe Ruth of the Yankees hit 41.

Judge, who is from Northern California, had a meeting with the San Francisco Giants this past month. He might be the first captain of New York since Derek Jeter left the team following the 2014 campaign.
