Due to Tuesday night’s expected rainout of the Angels-Yankees game in the Bronx, both teams had to make changes to their starting lineups. The Yankees, who were also off on Monday, will not be using Marcus Stroman for his usual rotational spot.

After making his last start on Friday, Stroman will return to the rotation on Sunday, August 11, which means he will have eight days off. The Yankees will play a doubleheader on Wednesday, but they will still have the opportunity to employ Luis Gil, Nestor Cortes, Carlos Ródon, and Gerrit Cole on regular or extra rest in preparation for Sunday because of the off day on Monday and the postponement on Tuesday.Wednesday’s second game of the doubleheader will be started by Will Warren.

After making 14 starts, Stroman, 33, was 6-2 with a 2.82 ERA, but he has since regressed, which was to be expected given his underlying numbers from the strong start. He has a 6.87 ERA and a 1-4 record in his previous eight outings. His previous two appearances have been especially bad; in Boston, he gave up five runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings, and in 2 2/3 innings, the Blue Jays, who are currently in last place, pounded him for seven runs on eight hits.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Wednesday, “I just thought there’d be some benefit in Stro having a couple of bullpens to work through some things.”

Boone didn’t appear concerned despite Stroman’s four-seam fastball showing a decline in velocity during his most recent outing (average of 88.8 mph compared to a season average of 89.8).

According to the manager, “I’m not too concerned about it,” on Wednesday. “I keep an eye on it, but based on what he’s been working through, what he’s seen on the video, and how his bullpen performed [on Tuesday], I thought he was in a really good place right now. Therefore, not too worried. And he feels well physically.”

The Yankees are in first place in the AL East by half a game going into their doubleheader on Wednesday with a record of 67-46.
