Juan Soto is fed up with opposition teams denying his teammate an opportunity to hit with the bat.
The outfielder for the New York Yankees expressed his disapproval of the Toronto Blue Jays’ deliberate walking of star Aaron Judge after the player was awarded three extra bases on Sunday.
It’s awful. Soto stated, “You want him at the plate,” according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. “You watch them pass him over, even though I’m trying my hardest to put him up. It just aggravates me so much. That doesn’t sit well with me. I want them to put him to the test to see how strong he is. That’s just the way things are. That’s how the game works. You have to accept that they are also attempting to win.”
In their earlier encounter on Saturday, the Blue Jays did not intentionally walk Judge three times, but they did walk him with two outs and no one on base. Following Saturday’s game, Toronto manager John Schneider gave an explanation of his thinking.
Schneider reportedly added, “I honestly didn’t feel like seeing him swing,” according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “He’s, in my opinion, in a different league than everyone else. With a single blow, he can change the course of a game.”
The Blue Jays prevailed in the opening game of the series on Friday, but they were defeated on Saturday and Sunday. After Toronto walked Judge three times on Sunday, the team was only one run away from victory.
According to Jorge Castillo of ESPN, Judge became the first player in 50 seasons to be intentionally walked in the first two innings of a game while the bases were empty on Saturday.
The efforts taken by the Blue Jays and other clubs to prevent Judge from hitting a home run make sense given the manner he has hit this season. With 41 home runs and a major league-high 103 RBI, he leads all major league players in hitting. In addition to his impressive power, he leads the majors in batting average (.322) and puts up strong hits.
