The Yankees had a bad night already, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. gave them something extra to worry about.

Chisholm left Monday’s 12-2 defeat to the White Sox with a left elbow injury two innings after lunging headfirst into home plate to score a run.

During the game at Guaranteed Rate Field, he was checked over by the White Sox team doctor. X-rays were taken, but the results were negative. He will get an MRI and more testing on Tuesday to find out how serious the injury is.

“It doesn’t really worry me,” Chisholm remarked. “Every test we’ve conducted here has yielded positive results. I’m still a little sore and feel it occasionally, but I think we’ll be well.

In the fifth inning, White Sox catcher Korey Lee made a late tag at the plate, which resulted in a play on which Chisholm injured his elbow.

In the top of the seventh, Chisholm was replaced by a pinch-hitter as the adrenaline wears off and he reports to manager Aaron Boone and the training staff that his elbow is “throbbing a little bit.”

“Hopefully, [Tuesday] brings good news,” stated Boone. “Hopefully, it won’t be too bad.”

It had been the high point of a dismal night for the Yankees before it was revealed that Chisholm had been hurt on the play.

With two outs, Chisholm singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a fastball to Anthony Volpe, who grounded out to shortstop.

Running around third base nonstop, Chisholm dove into home before the tag to bring the Yankees within four runs.

Luis Gil lasted just four innings, so Monday’s heavy lifting fell to a weak Yankees bullpen.

Before the White Sox roughed up Enyel De Los Santos for seven runs in one and a half innings (requiring 48 pitches to get through), Tim Hill gave up one run over two and a half innings.

It was just the most recent difficult night for a bullpen that has recently started to show more cracks.

Boone remarked, “I have a lot of faith in a lot of guys down there.” “We were able to assist a few individuals who were struggling here in getting right. However, I think we have the foundation of a solid one down there.

Gil’s brief appearance could make the Yankees think about placing him in the minors for the required minimum of 15 days.

The Yankees need a new arm for their bullpen, which only has one reliever (Jake Cousins) with minor league options left. They also need a bullpen game or a spot starter for Wednesday’s series finale.

Gil’s next start would not come until Tuesday of the following week because they had two days off. They could also reorganise the rotation so that they don’t need a fifth starter until August 24.

Barring an injury, Gil would not be eligible to be brought back up by then, but he would be by his next rotational turn.

Boone caught up with Grady Sizemore, his old Cleveland teammate who took over as the White Sox’s temporary manager last week, before the game.

Grady Sizemore was a “star” from the moment he entered the major leagues, and Boone expressed his desire that people would see his talent as a player. “I loved him; he was a great teammate.” played the game with a lot of intensity, was an excellent athlete, and made a terrific teammate. I was thrilled when he returned to the game because I knew he had done so a few years prior. He’s thrilled to have this chance. Love the individual.
