Mitchell Chaffee was recalled by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday from the Syracuse Crunch. Prior to the team’s break, the 26-year-old was moved, but as Austin Watson and Tanner Jeannot were still recovering, he was called back to assist the Bolts on their next road trip. Chaffee will aid in the front lines, but there are still some defensive-related problems that need to be resolved.
Chaffee only managed one goal in three games during his brief visit at Syracuse, but it was a spectacular goal—he scored with 15 seconds remaining in the second half to help the team defeat the Rochester Americans 2-1.
He now leads the Crunch in goals scored so far this season with 12. Felix Robert leads the team in goals scored with 11, while Max Groshev has ten. That third recall of the season for Chaffee might not last long, though. The Lightning are hoping Tanner Jeannot can make a comeback when they travel through Ohio, Massachusetts, and New York in their next road trip.
In three Lightning games Chaffee has proven to be a tenacious forechecker and has two points (one goal, one assist). Before being moved, he probably has at least one more NHL game left in him. As they pursue the Cleveland Monsters, who lead the North Division standings, the Crunch will be more than pleased to have his talents once he arrives.
