Correa scores twice as the Twins defeat Athletics 6-2 in the opening game of their doubleheader.
Minneapolis, Minnesota (AP) – In the opening game of a doubleheader on Sunday, the Minnesota Twins easily defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-2 thanks to two home runs from Carlos Correa, who had a three-hit day.
Along with their two hits, Royce Lewis and Carlos Santana also hit home runs, Bailey Ober pitched into the seventh inning, and Minnesota won for the sixth time in seven games as well as four games in a row.
Jhoan Duran got the final out for his 11th save.
In his last seven games, Correa is 18 for 30 with three home runs.
A massive home run to the third deck down the left-field line was his third hit. This marks Correa’s 12th career multihomer game and his first since June 22, 2022.
JP Sears (4-6) of Oakland started the game and gave up nine hits and three home runs in 4 1/3 innings. In his first 14 starts this season, the left-hander gave up just eight home runs; in his last five, he has given up none.
He gave up on two of the first three hitters from Minnesota.
Correa homered into the first row of bleachers in left center after walking to Manny Margot. With a 3-0 advantage, Lewis blasted the following pitch to the second row in right-center.
Lewis had been out for more than two months due to a quad injury sustained on opening day, but in his 11 games this season, he is 15 for 38 with six home runs and a hit in all but one of them.
In the seventh, Santana struck a two-run home run.
Through six innings, Oakland had only one hitter reach second base. Willi Castro, the left-fielder, threw out Tyler Soderstrom as he attempted to turn a single in the fourth inning into a double, but it was almost two.
After surrendering Cameron’s home run in the seventh inning, Ober (6-4) was relieved; he had eight strikeouts and six hits allowed. During his previous three starts, he gave up 19 hits and 13 earned runs in 14 2/3 innings of work.
