Following his arrest, the Ohio State Quarterback is suspended.
Ohio State quarterback J. T. Barrett, a redshirt sophomore and team captain, was cited by Columbus police on Saturday morning for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, only one week after regaining the starting role. Coach Urban Meyer punished Barrett for one game.
The Ohio State athletics department verified the event in a statement on Saturday morning. It was first reported by the website Eleven Warriors.
Barrett, 20, was detained at a checkpoint close to the university, according to several news sources, and his blood alcohol content was just a little bit higher than Ohio’s 21-and-over 0.08 percent standard. For individuals under 21, the cap is 0.02 percent.
Barrett will be required to submit to an obligatory two-game ban if he breaks departmental policy again, and the athletics department has mandated that he be tested for alcohol on a regular basis.
Last season, Barrett was thrown into the starting lineup when Braxton Miller, the team’s expected starter, suffered a season-ending injury in the summer.
After leading Ohio State to an 11-1 record, Barrett suffered a broken ankle in the final regular-season game.
That’s when redshirt junior Cardale Jones took over, leading the squad to a 3-0 victory and the national championship.
Jones remained in the starting lineup until Meyer declared that Barrett would make his Rutgers debut on October 24.
This past weekend, No. 1 Ohio State (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) was off from action. On November 7, it plays its next game against Minnesota.
