Reportedly, Chip Kelly is leaving UCLA to take over as offensive coordinator at Ohio State.
Chip Kelly is leaving UCLA to take a position as Ohio State’s next offensive coordinator after serving as Westwood’s coordinator for the previous six seasons. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic broke the initial news about the move on Friday afternoon.
Bill O’Brien, who played for the New England Patriots in 2023, was previously hired by Ohio State to take over the offensive coordinator position.
Nonetheless, he was appointed as Boston College’s new head coach following Jeff Hafley’s departure to become the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator.
Kelly, 60, led the Bruins for six years, going 35-34. In the previous three seasons, he had at least eight victories, and he concluded 2023 with an 8-5 record.
In the redesigned Big Ten, the former Oregon head coach will continue to lead the Buckeyes. On October 12, the team will play the Ducks in Eugene.
With the signing of the No. 5 ranked 2024 recruiting class (per 247Sports Composite rankings), which includes the nation’s top talent in Hollywood, Florida’s Chaminade-Madonna wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State has had an eventful offseason, to put it mildly.
Big names like former Alabama safety Blake Downs, former Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins, and former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard are just a few of the players Ryan Day and company have added via the transfer portal.
The former Alabama early enrollee quarterback Julian Sayin, a five-star prospect from Carlsbad, California, in the 2024 class, was also added by the Buckeyes.
For the past three years, Ryan Day has struggled with Michigan, as the Wolverines have defeated the Buckeyes three times in a row and won their first national championship since 1997.
They might be able to overcome that obstacle if they bring in Chip Kelly, one of the most intelligent offensive minds in college football.
