Among the new faces seen at Swallows practice is former Pirates midfielder
The former Orlando Pirates midfielder is one of the fresh faces who have been observed at Moroka Swallows’ training as they rebuild their team following the dismissal of over twenty players.
Following the players’ walkout over unpaid salaries, the Dube Birds allegedly fired the bulk of their team. The club was unable to play its two DStv Premiership matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows because they refused to train for days.
Following the disciplinary hearing, Swallows fired 22 players and reportedly fired more a few days later.
In an unexpected development, though, Daniel Akpeyi, Tlakusani Mthethwa, and Gabadinho Mhango—who were purportedly among those fired—returned to Swallows training.
Last week, the club shared the trio’s photos on its social media accounts.
At their training, some trialists have been sighted as they get ready for what promises to be a difficult second round of the 2023–2024 season.
ASKING AT THE MOROKA SWALLOWS TRAINING: WHO ARE THE NEW FACES?
According to FARPost, the Dube Birds have accepted trialists Tristan Nikitaridis and Augustine Mahlonoko, a former attacking midfielder for the Orlando Pirates.
Mahlonoko, who is now aiming for a top-flight comeback, left La Masia to try his luck with the Casric Stars in January. Additionally, Nikitaridis was evaluated by AmaZulu last month, but the team opted not to sign him.
SABC Sport revealed last week that Swallows head coach Steve Komphela had not shown up for practice when the team resumed operations. The report further stated that the practices were overseen by assistant coaches Musa Nyatama and Ditheko Mototo.
What is ahead for the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor is still to be seen.
Swallows will go to the Western Cape to start their second round. On Tuesday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m., they play Cape City at DHL Stadium.
