Former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry is reportedly interviewing for a job on the Eagles’ staff.
Vic Fangio is anticipated to take over as the defensive coordinator for the Eagles in the near future. Dave Zangaro and Reuben Frank discuss their opinions about him.
The Eagles are apparently interviewing a former defensive coordinator as they continue to reorganize their coaching staff for 2024.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Joe Barry, the former defensive coordinator for the Packers, will be interviewed by the Eagles for a job.
Vic Fangio is expected to take over as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator; therefore, it appears like Barry is conducting interviews to become a position coach. Barry formerly worked as a linebackers coach with the Bucs, Chargers, and Rams in the NFL. In fact, he filled that position with the Chargers from 2012 to 2014, replacing a young Nick Sirianni. So there’s that familiarity with the head coach of the Eagles.
After serving as the DC for three years in Green Bay, Barry, 53, was let go by the Packers earlier this week. He has also played in the NFL as a DC for Detroit and Washington.
Former Temple DC coach D.J. Eliot led the Eagles’ linebackers last season. Nick Rallis had left with Jonathan Gannon to go to Arizona following the 2022 campaign.
There will probably be multiple positional coach changes this offseason due to upheaval at both coordinator positions. During his Wednesday end-of-season press conference, Sirianni was questioned about that. It’s difficult to think of any other position coaches are secure in, aside from longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.
We’re still at work. We’re still at work. Yes, and that’s the difficult part, Sirianni stated. Some guys are still up in the air, and you’re still working. I feel bad for them because we are changing coordinators, and some of the players and their families are in a precarious situation because I have to get a coordinator in before we decide on position coaches or quality control personnel.
I know I have faith in the men up there, but some of the coordinators need to be able to bring in one or two, if not more, of their players. It is still a process of evaluation. It’s possible that this won’t be resolved until the coordinator is employed. As long as they can cooperate—until that coordinator meets with some of the boys, that is. Thus, that remains a process that we are undergoing.
Barry might not have much if he becomes the linebackers coach for the Eagles. Zach Cunningham and Nicholas Morrow proved to be the Eagles’ best off-ball backs in 2023. Cunningham waited until August to sign, and Morrow was left off of the first 53-man roster.
Though Nakobe Dean, a 2022 third-round pick, battled to remain on the field in his first opportunity to start at full time in 2023 and was placed on injured reserve twice, the Eagles are still high on Dean.
