Kyle Shanahan verifies the rumored coaching changes for the 49ers

On a conference call with media on Wednesday, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers Kyle Shanahan announced the firing of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Shanahan also verified the exits of four assistant coaches, all of whom were previously known to exist.

RELATED49ers: Steve Wilks, defensive coordinator, is fired
James Cregg, the Raiders’ assistant offensive line coach, was hired, according to Shanahan. “…[Assistant head coach and running backs coach] Anthony Lynn will be the run-game coordinator at Washington, along with [assistant defensive line coach] Darryl Tapp, the D-line coach. Furthermore, I think we’ve already discussed [offensive passing game specialist] Clint Kubiak.”

Kubiak will take over as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

The 49ers need to find someone to take Wilks’ place and complete those roles. It will be interesting to observe how Shanahan decides to proceed.

Julian Blackmon, a safety, has rejoined the Colts after visiting the 49ers.

Julian Blackmon, a safety, is re-signing with the Indianapolis Colts after visiting the San Francisco 49ers on March 21. The experienced defender was apparently still wanted by the organization, but they weren’t in a rush to provide him a contract.

NFL executive: 49ers’ contract negotiations with Brandon Aiyuk may be impacted by the draft
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers were in active contract negotiations, as general manager John Lynch of the organization revealed last week.

But according to an NFL Network report by Mike Garafolo, the two sides were “not close” to coming to an agreement.

Before the NFL Draft, which begins later this month, nobody anticipates a deal to be completed. Prior to training camp, this 49ers front office has a history of securing large contract extensions later in the offseason.

This was the situation with wide receiver Deebo Samuel in 2022, linebacker Fred Warner in 2021, and tight end George Kittle in 2020. Defense end Nick Bosa did not sign a contract last year.

No agreement: Lions match the 49ers’ TE offer. Brock Wright

Brock Wright, a tight end for the Detroit Lions, has decided against playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Wright was signed to an offer sheet by the 49ers last Friday, which gave the Lions the option to match the offer.

With a first-right-of-refusal contract that guaranteed him $2.985 million for the 2024 campaign, the Lions had tendered Wright. The $12 million, three-year contract with a $6 million guarantee was made by San Francisco.

Wright will remain in Detroit as the Lions have chosen to match the 49ers’ offer, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
