Firefighters are battling a wildfire that broke out soon after 1 p.m. this afternoon and affected four industrial units on Marine Parade in Southampton.
It’s unclear what ignited the fire.
Southampton FC was scheduled to meet Preston today evening in the Championship, as the Saints continue their bid for promotion.
The football club stated that the match had to be postponed because the fire had created “considerable disturbance” in the neighborhood.
They stated that the decision was made following consultation with local authorities and emergency services.
They added: “We are grateful for Preston’s cooperation with the EFL [English Football League], and while we understand the sadness fans may feel, we hope they will realize the importance of putting the safety of both clubs’ supporters and personnel first.”
“The game will be rescheduled for a later date, which will be announced shortly, and all tickets for tonight’s game will be valid for the rescheduled match.”
