NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Sam LaPorta, a rookie tight end from a college program not recognized for its offensive skill, has adapted quickly to the NFL and is contributing significantly to what the Detroit Lions hope will be a memorable season.
With nine receptions for 140 yards, including a touchdown early in the game and a key first-down catch in the closing minutes, LaPorta recorded career-highs. Detroit upset the fading New Orleans Saints 33-28 on Sunday to earn its best record through 12 games since 1962.
Jared Goff of the Lions remarked of LaPorta, an Iowa native selected in the second round of the draft, “I’m as comfortable with him as anyone I’ve ever played with.” “It’s quite amazing for a rookie.” I can always rely on him when things go tough because he is such a trustworthy man. He’s a clutch player, I know that.
Defense lineman Bruce Irvin hit quarterback Derek Carr as he threw a pass in the fourth quarter, resulting in injuries to his head, shoulder, and back for the Saints. Irvin took a hit when he pushed Carr with his entire body when they struck the turf.
This season, Carr has missed three games due to upper-body injuries or concussion symptoms. Jameis Winston took over for Carr.
