Mark Philippoussis has been fined nearly $15,000 by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for breaching betting sponsorship rules.
The ITIA said Philippoussis, a former top-10 player who now coaches professionally, was also given a suspended four-month ban “after receiving payment for providing a voiceover to promotional content for a gaming operator”.
The suspension does not come into force unless there is a further breach of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP) during a four-month period, which started on July 21.
The ITIA said Philippoussis did not contest the charge and had fully cooperated with the investigation.
“As a sport, tennis has decided that accredited individuals should not have commercial relationships with betting companies,” ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse said in a statement.
“Whilst this case is clearly not one of corruption, it is a rule that players, coaches, and others in the sport need to be aware of.”
The ITIA said Philippoussis was considered a “covered person” because he was an accredited coach, meaning they were “subject to the sport’s rules around relationships with betting operators”.
Philippoussis reached a career-high ranking of eight as a player in 1999.
He was runner-up to Pat Rafter at the 1998 US Open and lost to Roger Federer in the 2003 Wimbledon final.
Philippoussis also helped Australia to two Davis Cup victories, in 1999 and 2003.
The 46-year-old has worked with current top-10 player Stefanos Tsitsipas as a coach.
