Stefanos Tsitsipas admitted to being “not good enough” after losing to Dominic Stricker at the US Open.
The Greek lost in five sets against Stricker, who served for the match in the fourth set but was unable to finish the job, resulting in a sad setback to his Swiss opponent.
Tsitsipas had been successful in Los Cabos, capturing his first championship of the season, but then suffered a surprising loss to Gael Monfils in Toronto as he prepared for the year’s last Grand Slam tournament in New York.
In a press conference following his defeat, the 25-year-old said he underperformed.
He stated, “By no means am I supposed to blame anyone or any member of my team. Everything on the court is under my control and talents, and the way I play this sport is evident on the court. “If I can’t provide, I’m not doing well.”
He continued, “That’s what occurred this summer. I was not good enough to deliver and achieve satisfactory results. I’m not blaming anything.
“It’s simply a terrible performance following Los Cabos. I had a difficult transition to Toronto due to severe jet lag, which I had never experienced on tour. I had an extremely difficult match against Gael.
Tsitsipas admitted that he had considered retirement during his defeat against the Frenchman.
“I was considering retiring on that specific occasion, but I went in and hoped to do something,” he continued.
“Other than that, I have nothing to say about the other two results, including today’s. It was sheer competition. My opponent played far better tennis than I did. “I want to congratulate him because I consider myself a decent player and don’t want to give my opponents an easy time on the court.”I push as hard as I can, and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. I continue on with my life. Hopefully I can improve in the future.”
