It’s the news that many West Bromwich Albion fans were praying for. Their popular head coach, Carlos Corberán, has signed a new contract that will keep him with the club until 2027.
Since joining the club in October, he has led the Baggies to 10 victory in 13 Championship games.
However, with his performance came reports of interest from other clubs.
Leeds United, who lost to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, terminated manager Jesse Marsch.
If Leeds had come calling for Corberan, he could have been forgiven for displaying interest in the position. Leeds United are in the Premier League, have a strong squad – albeit one that has struggled this season – and, of course, have a massive global fan base.
However, Corberan’s choice to sign the new contract demonstrates that his attention is clearly focused on the task at hand. The club’s Chief Executive, Ron Gourlay, stated on wba.co.uk: “His passion for the game we all love has been infectious for all involved with the club, not least our players, who have clearly benefited from Carlos’ first-class coaching.”
While Corberán himself stated, “I think that success can only be achieved when everyone works together, and the way I have been made to feel welcome at this wonderful club has given me confidence that this is the ideal place for me.”
Albion are presently sixth in the Championship; if Corberán continues to produce the remarkable results he has so far, promotion back to the top flight is a possibility.
