Carlos Alcaraz’s ambitions for a Sunshine Double were dashed in stunning fashion, as the top-seeded Spaniard lost 6-2 6-4 to Grigor Dimitrov, who will meet Alexander Zverev in the Miami Open semifinals.
Dimitrov, the Bulgarian 11th seed, won 77% of his first-serve points compared to 56% for Alcaraz, turned down four of five break points, and broke the Spaniard four times in the 92-minute match.
It was a painful setback for Alcaraz, who arrived in Miami full of optimism after winning the Indian Wells title 11 days prior, but fell three wins short of becoming the first man to win the Sunshine Double since Roger Federer in 2017. “He played incredible tennis, almost perfect. I was unable to locate solutions. I couldn’t think of a method to make him feel uncomfortable on the court. “It was a fantastic game from his side,” Alcaraz stated.
“I left the court thinking that I should have changed my game a little earlier, but I still feel like I played decent tennis. Not perfect, but good.

“But I’m frustrated right now because he made me feel like a 13-year-old. It was wild. I was telling my team that I didn’t know what I had to do. I don’t know what his weakness is. I know nothing.”
“Overall, to win against him, you must perform at your best. That’s simply the way it is,” Dimitrov remarked after defeating world number two Alcaraz for the second time in as many meetings.
