Emma Raducanu will not compete in the French Open today after withdrawing from the event before qualifying earlier this week.
The 21-year-old’s slide in the rankings this year has forced her to rely on wildcards to compete in some of the major tournaments.
She was able to avoid qualifying at the Australian Open earlier this year because her protected ranking was sufficient to get her into the main draw following a number of withdrawals.
But it was a different situation heading into Roland Garros, with Raducanu having to go through three rounds of qualifying since her protected rating was insufficient to join the main draw. The British tennis player was anticipated to make it through three rounds of qualifying to the French Open, but she declared on the opening day of the tournament that she was withdrawing.
“It’s critical for me to continue laying the groundwork, and I’ll take the time to complete a healthy block before the grass and subsequent hard-court seasons to give myself a chance to stay fit for the rest of the year,” she added.
Raducanu has only been back in action for a few months following a lengthy injury layoff in 2023.
She had surgery on both wrists a little over a year ago, which prevented her from playing for the rest of the season.
Raducanu has since been on a recovery track, and her performance to the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open helped her climb the rankings.
