With the exception of 11-time champion Rafael Nadal, all of the top players will be competing in the Monte Carlo Masters in the scenic town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. A surprise winner may be announced on Sunday week.

In the first of three ATP Masters 1000 clay-court events of the season, Novak Djokovic makes his comeback after missing Miami due to an unexpected third-round loss to Italian world no. 75 Luca Nardi at Indian Wells.

Although Djokovic is attempting to win the championship a third time—he has already done so twice in 2013 and 2015—he appears vulnerable because his half of the draw includes the tournament favorite Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning champion Andrey Rublev, and two-time French Open runner-up Casper Ruud.

Considering that Ruud, Alcaraz’s probable quarterfinal opponent, would be fatigued from competing for trophies in Estoril this weekend, the Serbian world number one has a point to prove.

However, he has established himself as the leader of the market, so it could be best to look for each-way value in the lower half of the draw.

Jannik Sinner, the winner of the Australian Open, has been the player of the year thus far, but the Italian has only won one of his 17 career titles on clay; instead, his current form has been better on hard courts.

Daniil Medvedev is regarded as a hard-court specialist; he has only once advanced to the final eight of the French Open. For that reason, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune are the two seeds to be avoided.

Tsitsipas is in his element right now; he won the Monte Carlo Masters twice in 2021 and 2022 before losing to Taylor Fritz in the final eight of his attempt to complete a hat-trick last season.

The Greek player, who lost to Djokovic in the French Open final in 2021, is in desperate need of a comeback, but he will undoubtedly receive a hero’s welcome on what is regarded as his preferred surface.

The 20-year-old Dane, ranked seventh, is a strong contender on the slower surfaces. He finished second to Rublev in the previous year’s Monte Carlo Masters and advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open twice.
