Alcaraz: The youngster is just too good, according to Tsitsipas
Despite his best efforts, Stefanos Tsitsipas was unable to overcome Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday at the Roland Garros quarterfinals. The Spanish superstar was unbeatable. Tsitsipas was trailing 0–6 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head match.
In his post-match press conference, he stated, “I tend to think that my ball quality is among the best on the Tour, and every time I get to play Carlos, I feel like he offers a shot quality that I don’t quite get against other opponents.” All it does is cause me problems. His shot seemed deep and full of topspin, and I’ve just couldn’t think of anything good to counter it.
Though Alcaraz is one of the few players on the ATP Tour who can overwhelm him, Tsitsipas said he rarely felt overmatched on the court. The Greek lauded his opponent’s quickness and likened him to Novak Djokovic for his ability to generate points with a strong tennis intelligence and change direction.
Tsitsipas arrived at Roland Garros full of confidence, having advanced to the Barcelona final and the Rome quarterfinals after capturing his third Monte-Carlo title in April.
After defeating Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round of the PIF ATP Rankings, the No. 9 seed in the rankings thought he was playing at his best in Paris. But the impenetrable Alcaraz stopped his amazing trajectory.
Regarding his hopes of winning the Roland Garros title, he remarked, “My chances, absolutely, I won’t lie, I was confident.” I had a greater sense of confidence than normal. I suppose that hurt me. I’m not sure.
I had a good feeling that I could play differently today than I have ever played against Carlos. The child is simply too talented.
I have nothing but praise for him because he is playing so brilliantly. I’ve made the most of whatever I could strive to do on the court. I made the most of everything. All I have to do is work this out.
It’s a challenging trip. It’s definitely not a nice one. Naturally, I wish him the best because playing against him makes me realize how much I still need to improve as a tennis player.
