Stefanos Tsitsipas thrives at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
The Greek came back to overcome World No. 2 Jannik Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 on Saturday, earning the biggest victory of his season and putting himself only one victory away from winning his third Principality championship.
In an intensely heated match where both players blasted the ball quickly, Tsitsipas, as he usually does at the clay-court tournament, found a way. After spending two hours and forty minutes on the court, the Greek advanced after outwitting Sinner with his powerful forehand and coming back from 2-4 in set three.
It was the best game of tennis I have ever been able to play. As we’ve seen throughout the year so far, Jannik was an incredibly challenging opponent.
I could tell that he has been really consistent with his game today,” Tsitsipas remarked. “He is one of the hardest opponents I have encountered to date, and I am happy of my ability to find solutions when there weren’t many. He gave me a really challenging game, and the way I conquered it is just amazing.”
Tsitsipas entered the Principality with a modest 11-6 record for 2024, but it seems that returning to the venue where he won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022 has energized him.
In the second semi-final of the day, the 25-year-old Greek player defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, to advance to his seventh ATP Masters 1000 final.
After falling below the Top 10 for the first time in five years in February, the ten-time tour-level champion moved up three spots to No. 9 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
This week, Tsitsipas played with a newfound sense of freedom. He followed up his excellent victories over Karen Khachanov and Alexander Zverev with an aggressive performance against Sinner, who had a leg injury in the third set and needed medical attention twice.
In their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, Tsitsipas now leads the second seed 6-3. His victory over the Italian was his first Top 3 triumph since 2022, when he defeated Daniil Medvedev in Cincinnati.
“Knowing that I’ve achieved a victory like this is really helpful. I’m really satisfied with myself for achieving a victory like this and returning to the tennis scene,” Tsitsipas remarked. “These are the kinds of matchups you want to play in when you put in a lot of work every day.”
Sinner has only lost once this season, this time against. Entering his second Monte-Carlo semifinal, the Italian departs the Principality with the most victories (25), and most titles (2003) on the Tour in 2024.
Tsitsipas got underway fast in front of an enthusiastic audience on a sun-drenched Court Rainier III. With an early break to lead 2-1, the Greek was unstoppable on his first serve, winning 13 of 14 points on his first attempt to deny Sinner any opportunity to break point.
But at the beginning of the second set, Sinner answered, stepping up his play and making more returns to lead 3-0.
According to Infosys ATP Stats, the Italian delivered his finest performance when serving out for 5-3 and held off five break points to square the match. He had 14 wins in the second set.
As the match entered its third set, both players kept getting better, with Sinner jumping out to a 4-1 lead. But in the seventh game of the set, the Italian appeared to aggravate his knee, and at 4-3 he received medical attention.
Upon the restart, Tsitsipas came out swinging, breaking straight through to even the score at four. Then, he unleashed a barrage of power off both wings to complete a stunning victory as Sinner rapidly lost strength.
