After his Wimbledon first-round victory over Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas shared a touching post-match moment with his fiancée and fellow player, Paula Badosa. After defeating Thiem in a thrilling five-set victory, the Greek fifth seed secured a thrilling second round matchup with Andy Murray.
Tsitsipas prevailed 3-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (10-8) after an exciting final set tiebreak. After winning her own first round encounter against American Alison Riske-Amritraj, Badosa was in the stands to see the captivating conclusion of the bout.
Only last month, in the midst of a deluge of adorable to genuinely embarrassing recordings of themselves together, did Badosa and Tsitsipas officially announce their relationship. In a heartfelt on-court interview after Tsitsipas’ victory, the couple provided fans a glimpse into their developing romance.
Before the interviewer informed him that his girlfriend had just returned from her own triumph on a different court, the Greek star—who is also partnering with Badosa in the Wimbledon mixed doubles—was spotted making gestures towards her in the spectators. “Oh!” I only recently learned. I was in the dark. To the Spaniard, he exclaimed, “Congrats!”
On his Centre Court home, the 24-year-old Tsitsipas will next take on Murray, the two-time Wimbledon champion.
After a match that lasted two days, four hours of match play, and five grueling sets, Tsitsipas admitted, “I won’t lie, it was extremely stressful.”
“I have always been at my best when playing with Dominic; he is someone I can never get enough of.”
In reference to taking on Murray, Tsitsipas, who will be making his Center Court debut, said:
“I don’t anticipate having any assistance from anyone. It’s not my first experience. Ten years have passed since the Scottish player won the SW19 championship, and Tsitsipas stated:
“I was there when he won his first Wimbledon championship. Now that I think about it, I get chills because I could almost feel what he went through because he had such a hard time closing that last game.
“I get chills whenever I see that again. I’ll approach it with utmost respect for him. He is such a fierce rival. Center Court reminds me a lot of his living room.”

The two have already played twice: in a thrilling five-set match at the US Open in 2021, where Murray’s victory was upset by the length of the Greek’s bathroom breaks; and in Stuttgart last summer on grass, where Murray recorded one of his best victories following hip surgery.
Despite losing 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 7-5, Australia’s Jordan Thompson performed well against second seed Novak Djokovic on Center Court. He served brilliantly and displayed a wonderful touch around the net in one of the few second round matches played due to the bad weather.
After defeating Diego Swartzmann of Argentina 7-5 6-1 6-2, Jannik Sinner, the eighth-seeded Italian, advances to the third round as well.
After Russian players were banned from Wimbledon last year owing to the conflict in Ukraine, third seed Daniil Medvedev defeated Arthur Fery 7-5 6-4 6-3 in first round action. With a straight-set victory over another British wildcard, George Loffhagen, Danish sixth seed Holger Rune advanced to the second round for the first time.
Seed No. 9 While fellow American and No. 10 seed Frances Tiafoe easily defeated China’s Wu Yibing, Taylor Fritz battled past Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in five sets.
The player with the highest ranking to lose was Borna Coric of Croatia, who was seeded 13th and lost shockingly to Guido Pella of Argentina in a five-set match that lasted three and a half hours.
