Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Quarterback Position in the Offseason Outlook
In Tampa Bay in 2023, the former Heisman Trophy winner and first overall choice revitalized his career. His throwing yards, touchdowns, and completion percentage all set career highs, and he helped the Bucs advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Last season, Mayfield instilled a newfound confidence and swagger in the team, winning over everyone to take on the roles of captain and leader. Seemingly, everything points to Mayfield returning to the Bucs on a long-term contract that will keep him there for the foreseeable future.Last season, Wolford played a key role in helping quarterbacks Mayfield and Trask adjust to the new offensive scheme implemented by former offensive coordinator Dave Canales. Wolford, who has worked with new Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen, is a seasoned quarterback who is frequently referred to as the sharpest quarterback in the room. In order to stay in Tampa and most likely return the following season, the Wolfors declined many chances to join the active squads of other teams after Matt Stafford lost time with the Rams and instead chose to stay on the Bucs practice squad.
A lot depends on the Buccaneers and Mayfield being able to come to an agreement, but it seems like both parties are motivated to make a deal. In the unusual event that things fall through, the Bucs would not be able to select any of the top signal callers in the draft and would have few alternatives in free agency. Even so, it’s highly probable that Mayifeld will start at quarterback in 2024.
With Trask under contract and Mayfield and Wolford probably re-signing, the Bucs quarterback room may be set for the upcoming year. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be out of the question that the Bucs chose a quarterback on day three to develop on the practice squad, given the depth of the quarterback class.
