Leylah Fernandez has pulled out of the WTA 500 Adelaide International, which was supposed to happen from January 8–13. The Canadian was two positions away from direct entry when he was confirmed into the tournament’s main draw. Lesia Tsurenko, ranked 32nd in the world, was holding the final position in the draw until that time, therefore she would have had to start in the qualifications prior to her withdrawal.
Although Fernandez’s absence in Adelaide has not been explained, it is concerning because the Australian has locked up the 31st seed spot for the 2024 Australian Open, which begins in only one week.
