Coco Gauff has the mindset of Roger Federer, said Serena Williams’ former coach Rick Macci
Rick Macci, Williams’ childhood mentor, recently discussed Coco Gauff’s mindset while covering the Australian Open for NBC News.
At last year’s US Open, Coco Gauff won her first major championship in a dramatic manner, coming back from a set down to defeat World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka. The 19-year-old lost to the big-hitter from Belarus in a rematch of their New York final after finishing in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows.
In that regard, Rick Macci was invited to share his predictions for Americans in 2024. The well-known coach started off by saying that, for a 19-year-old, her most recent big campaign was impressive.
After praising her backhand, Macci said a few words about her mentality. He saw similarities between her on-court demeanor and the mindset exhibited by 20-time Major winner Roger Federer during his remarkable career.
We have previously discussed the fact that she is not leaving. Rick Macci stated on NBC, She’s a youngster with one of the finest backhands on the tour. But her backhand isn’t as good as her backbone, in my opinion.I adore her catchphrase, No Days Off. Coco’s condition will only improve. She possesses Roger Federer’s attitude, which is something I truly adore about her.
Coco Gauff might win a double-digit major title, according to Rick Macci.
Rick Macci has no doubts about Coco Gauff’s abilities. The American stated last week that he still thought the teen had a certain mindset before asserting that her major count might be in the double tens.
How many Grand Slams can I win? The Delray Dart could order double digits off the menu because I adore her backbone as much as her backhand, Macci stated on his X (formerly Twitter) name.
Coco Gauff, who is only 19 years old, has already had a successful career. In addition to her winning run at the US Open in 2023, the American advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals in 2024 and the Roland Garros final in 2022.
Additionally, since going professional in 2018, the teenage sensation has won seven WTA titles. Last year, she had the best season of her career, taking home four trophies and winning nine games against opponents ranked in the top ten.
In doubles, Gauff is a strong player, having climbed to the top of the world rankings alongside close friend Jessica Pegula in September of last year. In women’s doubles, she has won eight titles overall with partners Pegula (5) and Caty McNally (3).
