Texas’s Frisco Every Dallas Cowboys season has a new theme created by Mike McCarthy. It was “Carpe Omnia” in 2023, which is Latin for seize everything.
Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager, has decided to retain McCarthy for a fifth season, so the head coach may not need to give the 2024 theme any attention.
What is the sound of all or nothing?
McCarthy signed a five-year contract with the Cowboys in 2020; during the coach-Jones meeting on Wednesday, there was no indication that an extension was reached.
It appears that it will be all or nothing for quarterback Dak Prescott, who will also be approaching the final year of his deal with the Cowboys.
Before the season begins, the Cowboys still have time to work on a Prescott extension, but he will count $59.4 million against the salary cap. It would be challenging for the Cowboys to add free agents or hold onto their own important players if Prescott’s deal wasn’t extended or didn’t include voidable years. However, despite starting for eight years, Prescott has a 2-5 postseason record and has never played in a conference championship game.
The Cowboys would have to decide whether to sign him to a contract that would put him in the $50 million per year range, making him one of the top-paid quarterbacks in the league, despite the fact that they would be unable to use the franchise tag on him in 2025.
Other things to think about now that McCarthy is back are:
How come McCarthy is still around?
His record is 42-25. In the last three seasons, he has won two NFC East championships. Prescott responded with his greatest season, leading the NFL in touchdown passes (36) a year after tying for the top in interceptions (15) while missing five games due to a broken thumb. McCarthy called plays this season for the first time in his Cowboys career.
The Cowboys have qualified for the postseason for three successive seasons, something they haven’t done since winning Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX during a six-year stretch from 1991 to 1996. Despite playing a 17-game schedule, McCarthy became the first coach in school history to record three consecutive 12-win seasons. The Cowboys finished first in points per game (29.9) and fifth in yards (371.6) in 2023 with McCarthy calling plays.
But in the end, McCarthy’s performance in the postseason will determine his fate. He has now suffered two losses in the opening round of the playoffs, both at AT&T Stadium, including a humiliating 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Was changing something taken into consideration?
If any, it was kept under wraps. Jones might have courted Jim Harbaugh, who recently won a national title at Michigan and previously led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl, or Bill Belichick, who won six Super Bowls before leaving the New England Patriots. Another person to think about would have been former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel.

DJ Moore of the Bears is keen to build on his successful season.
Although Jones is regarded as impulsive and risk-taking, he hasn’t made a significant move since 2012, when he signed cornerback Brandon Carr to a huge contract in free agency and traded up in the first round to select cornerback Morris Claiborne.
Next season, Jones turns eighty-two. His goal is to take home yet another title. It would be unrealistic to assume that he would have made a bid for a young offensive coordinator like Bobby Slowik of the Houston Texans or Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions. He is eager for a new coach to pick up the skills. That’s what he did with Jason Garrett.
And the other members of the coaching staff?
The Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Chargers, and Seattle Seahawks are the five teams that Dan Quinn is interviewing with for head coaching positions. As a result, the Cowboys may be searching for a defensive coordinator in a few days or weeks.
Are there any current Cowboys employees, such as defensive line coach Aden Durde, secondary coach Al Harris, or defensive passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., who are prepared to take over as coordinator?
Would Wink Martindale, who played for the New York Giants the previous two seasons, be a viable option as an outside coordinator?
Robert Prince, the position coach for wide receivers, is the only other unsigned coach. McCarthy’s initial contract was matched by the terms of every other position coach, which run until 2024.
