The initial word on the New York Yankees’ major trade deadline acquisition is positive.

The New York Post’s MLB insider Jon Heyman claims that after consulting with multiple physicians, the team decided that Jazz Chisholm’s UCL injury should be treated with rest and rehabilitation. In the interim, surgery will not be performed, and New York hopes to have its new third baseman back sometime in September.

On Monday night, while playing against the Chicago White Sox, Chisholm dove headfirst into home plate and sprained his left UCL. On Wednesday, Oswald Peraza, a former top prospect, was called up to replace him on the roster after he was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

With Chisholm sidelined, Oswaldo Cabrera—who has been playing well lately—and DJ LeMahieu are anticipated to shoulder the most of the responsibilities at third base. Peraza will probably get some time at the hot corner and another chance to show that he can hit in the major leagues.

Over the last two months of play in Triple-A, Peraza, 24, has shown great promise. Since July 24, he has hit seven home runs. He is slashing in August.35 at-bats,.257/.366/.657 with a 1.023 OPS.

Chisholm has been a significant spark plug for the Yankees since signing a contract with the pinstripes on July 28, so his loss is a major blow.

After being dealt from the Miami Marlins to the Bronx, Chisholm was hitting.316 with a 1.062 OPS and seven home runs in 14 games.

For the next two seasons, the team will have custody of left-handed swinger Chisholm. In addition to centre field, the 26-year-old can play second and third base.

The fact that Chisholm’s 2024 season was not declared to be finished is positive. In order to help them in the final stretch, the Yankees are hopeful he can avoid surgery and return off the IL next month.
