On the second day of free agency, the Leafs signed 27-year-old right-shot defenseman Philippe Myers for the league minimum.He receives $775K annually.
Myers, who spent a year in the AHL before spending some three seasons in Philadelphia, signed as a UFA with the Flyers after not being selected in the draft. He resigned in Philadelphia for three years when his ELC expired, but he ultimately ended up in Nashville and Tampa.
He signed a one-year contract extension with the Lightning, but he only appeared in five NHL games last season. Though the Leafs did not own his NHL rights, they are aware of him because he managed to wind up with the Marlies in 2021–2022.
Myers can score goals in the AHL, but he hardly ever does in the NHL. Despite playing in just 158 games over six seasons, he has eight goals and 36 points.
With the exception of his debut season and his stint in Nashville, Myers has demonstrated an expected goals rating above 50% in each of his seasons of play, despite the short sample size. This indicates that he can play competently at the bottom of an NHL lineup, at the very least.
He won’t likely blow you away with his abilities, but he is incredibly large and a respectable puck mover. Myers’ 6’6″ and 213 pounds account for his repeated NHL opportunities. Philipe Myers is a huge man who is a borderline NHL player who can play the right side, much like Jani Hakanpaa and Cade Weber.
