What has each of West Brom’s top six record acquisitions accomplished thus far?

Examining the current locations of West Brom’s six most expensive acquisitions

This season, West Bromwich Albion is fighting for a spot in the Premier League.

Although the Baggies have had a difficult few years in the championship, Carlos Corberan has given fans hope for the future.

The supporters’ sentiment has only grown stronger since Guochuan Lai took over, as his term has been highly unpopular.

However, throughout the Chinese businessman’s tenure at The Hawthorns, the club’s transfer record was broken several times.

Here, we examine the current status of the six most costly acquisitions in West Brom’s history.

Jay Rodriguez

Not shortly after Lai assumed control of the team as owner, in the summer of 2017, Jay Rodriguez signed a contract.

The attacker joined the West Midlands team two years after joining from Southampton for a reputed cost of £12 million.

In 2019, Rodriguez moved to Burnley, where he is still active in the league.

The forward assisted the Clarets in winning promotion to the Premier League the previous year, but it appears that they will lose in the first round this time around.

Salomón Rondon

In the summer of 2015, Salomón Rondon signed with the Baggies for a then-club-record £12 million.

The striker joined West Brom from Russian team Zenit St Petersburg and quickly established himself as a vital member of the team.

Before leaving the Baggies permanently in 2019 to join Chinese team Dalian Professional, Rondon first left on loan in 2018 to join Newcastle United.

In 2021, the 34-year-old made a comeback to English football with Everton; however, he has since left once more, first for River Plate and subsequently for Pachuca of Mexico.

Chadli Nacer

Nacer Chadli left Tottenham Hotspur to join West Brom in the summer of 2016.

The midfield player set a club record at the time with the estimated £13 million purchase.

Chadli played with the Hawthorns for two years before moving to Monaco in Ligue 1.

The now-34-year-old signed contracts with Anderlecht and Istanbul Başakşehir before joining Westerlo, a Belgian team.

Burke Oliver

Another club record addition was Oliver Burke, a Scottish player who cost the club £15 million when he signed with them in the summer of 2017.

After a trying few years with the Midlands team, the 26-year-old left again in 2020.

After that, he signed with Sheffield United and played on loan at Millwall until leaving the Blades in 2022.

Since then, Burke has joined German team Werder Bremen; he is presently on loan at Birmingham City, a rival in the Championship.

Karlan Grant

Karlan Grant left Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2020 to accept a contract with West Brom that was reportedly worth £15 million.

According to Fbref, the forward had a great 2021–22 season at the Hawthorns, netting 18 league goals from 44 games. However, he has subsequently found it difficult to return to that degree of consistency for the Baggies.

Due to this, he had to temporarily leave last summer and sign a loan deal with Cardiff City, his rivals, for the current season.

Grady Diangana

After the Baggies were promoted to the Premier League, Grady Diangana signed a contract with the possibility of earning up to £18 million in the summer of 2020.

The DR Congo international was instrumental in West Ham’s promotion to the Premier League on their season-long loan earlier in the previous year.

The 25-year-old is still with The Hawthorns, where he has developed into a vital member of the squad under Corberan as they aim to get promoted once more.
