Carlos Corberan made a triumphant homecoming to Huddersfield as West Brom overcame a deficit to win 4-1.
Delano Burgzorg handed the home team a well-earned lead at halftime, while the Baggies failed to muster a single shot in a miserable first-half performance.
But a rampaging away team put on a show in an outstanding second half to extend their winning streak to five games and strengthen their hold on a play-off spot.
The Baggies secured a crucial victory thanks to two goals from the highly effective Mikey Johnston, a goal on Kyle Bartley’s comeback, and a thunderbolt from Okay Yokuslu.
In his fourth game in charge, Andre Breitenreiter—Huddersfield’s fifth manager since Corberan departed the team in July 2022—oversaw another impressive start.
Burgzorg gave the Baggies the early lead, much as he had in the rematch in September, shortly before the half-hour mark.
The Dutch attacker scored his sixth goal of the season after dodging Darnell Furlong and launching a powerful shot that squirmed under goalie Alex Palmer.
And just moments later, a stunned West Brom came dangerously close to falling further behind, but they owed it all to Bartley’s valiant last-ditch effort to stop Jack Rudoni.
The Baggies only trailed by one goal in spite of a terrible first half, and Corberan’s advice during halftime proved to be crucial.
For the restart, a transformed side reappeared, and they quickly discovered their leveller to let the floodgates open.
Jed Wallace raced to the byline and set up Johnston, a Celtic loanee, for an easy tap-in, as the latter maintained his scorching goal-scoring form since switching teams in January.
Yokuslu gave Burgzorg a fantastic opportunity to give Huddersfield the lead again, but Palmer made a vital save to save Town from gaining a second.
And the visitors’ swift comeback was completed on the hour mark, making that miss crucial to the outcome of the match.
Wallace’s goal set up pinball in the hosts’ box, and Bartley was there to prod the ball home, making it his first start with a goal in seven games.
Yokuslu, a Turkish international who turned 30 on Saturday, celebrated his birthday weekend in spectacular fashion by hitting a piledriver from range that zipped past a defenseless Nicholls.
After Johnston scored his second goal of the afternoon, the dominating Baggies quickly added a fourth.
For his sixth goal in seven appearances, the brilliant winger dribbled past Matty Pearson and placed the ball past Nicholls with style.
To make the Terriers’ dismal afternoon even worse, Palmer made a fantastic double save to deny Danny Ward and Rudoni when they were still in the drop zone.
In the meantime, West Brom won their first league game at Huddersfield since 2000 and their first victory of the season despite losing first.
