After winning the NFC North last season, the Detroit Lions have made several moves to preserve its core, but quarterback Jared Goff’s contract is still up in the air.
During a Thursday appearance on WXYT (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk), general manager Brad Holmes discussed Goff’s situation and expressed his “faith that it’s going to get done” as long as the two parties continue to talk.
Holmes stated, “He’s earned an extension, first and foremost.” “It’s important, it’s a high priority for us and both sides are working really, really hard and these things just take time.”
Amon-Ra St. Brown, a wide receiver, and the Lions reached an agreement last month to extend his deal for $120 million over four years, with a $77 million guarantee. Additionally, they decided to extend Penei Sewell’s contract by $112 million for four years, with $85 million guaranteed. Sewell is an offensive tackle.
Regarding Goff, he is about to enter the last year of his contract, so there is still time to work out a deal, but it is a little urgent. According to Spotrac, he will earn a basic salary of $22.3 million in 2024, placing him eighth among all quarterbacks.
Given that the quarterback is still only 29 years old and is coming off of a stellar season in which he led the team to the NFC Championship Game while completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, it is not surprising that Detroit wants to get something done.
With more stability in the Lions offense with St. Brown, Sewell, and other players, the three-time Pro Bowler should continue to be productive for many years to come.
However, an extension of the contract is required first.
