Santi Hernández praises Marc Márquez: “He is my leader, for better or worse; he makes a difference, whether he’s riding or not.”
Santi Hernández and Marc Márquez have formed a tight bond in MotoGP over the last few years. Their cooperation has had numerous achievements and, more lately, some setbacks. Despite these failures, Hernández continues to enjoy sharing the garage with the former world champion.
The Spanish star’s chief technician began by describing his surprise when Márquez asked him to be by his side. Speaking to Honda’s documentary Behind the Dream, Hernández said, “When Marc, after we had worked together in Moto2 since 2011, asked me to join him in MotoGP, it was a tremendous surprise. I was not expecting it. I had no MotoGP experience, and it was a dream to be a part of this family.”
Hernández believes that many other championship participants should also win titles. He considers himself fortunate, but he also realizes that he has faced significant challenges. He specifically mentions Márquez’s crash at the beginning of 2020, saying, “I believe that many other mechanics deserve a world title.” Of course, you need a lot of passion and persistence, but above all, I was fortunate to work with a winning rider who had many successful seasons. We also struggled at the bottom of the table, despite winning so many titles. Marc’s injury and all the problems saddened us, but I am glad to have worked for HRC for 10 years.”
Despite the difficulties, Hernández maintains that Márquez is the one who pilots their ship. He underscored, “Marc is my leader, for better or worse.” I am only a part of a project. Marc is the one who makes the difference, both on and off the bike.
